Teen Driver Insurance

Clayton Hanley Insurance is here to help with all your insurance needs—including adding your teen driver to your auto policy. We understand that this is an exciting time for you and your teen. This can also be a challenging and difficult time, and we want to do everything we can to help you navigate the process. Together, we can make this time less stressful and easier to manage for you and your family. Our agents understand the increases that teen drivers cause your auto policy. All our agents have teen drivers on their auto insurance policies. We can help you find discounts, telematics, and bundle policies to help ease the pain of increased rates.

Adding a teen driver to you auto insurance policy will raise your rates. But, we can help you manage the cost. Give us a call or email so we can discuss ways you can save money when you add your teen driver. In addition to talking about money saving ideas, our companies can offer many discounts that include:

  • Good Student Discount
  • Driver Training Discount
  • Distant Student Discount
  • Tenure Reward
  • Telematics
  • User Based Insurance

These discounts vary between each insurance company.

Driving is a privilege and the safety of your teen is priority #1. A ‘New Driver Contract’ is a helpful way to establish a list of safe driving practices and expectations, along with consequences for not following the agreement. It encourages open communication and trust, while allowing your teen driver to safely explore their new independence on the road. We have created a blank contract for you –that is completely optional– but is something that we (as parents of current teen drivers) have found helpful.

In Missouri, you should add your teenager to your auto insurance policy as soon as they obtain their driver's license (Some states may require you to add them to your policy when they obtain a learner’s permit). If they have a learner’s permit, it's a good idea to inform your insurance company, as some policies may already provide coverage for permitted drivers under the parent's insurance.

Be sure to let us know when your child starts learning to drive and we'll go over the insurance implications with you and let you know what you need to do and when.

You can change your insurance agent without changing your insurance policy or carrier. You simply need to request a change of agent with your current insurance company. This can often be done with a phone call or by filling out a form provided by the insurer. It's a straightforward process and does not affect your existing coverage terms or premiums.

Clayton Hanley Insurance can make this super easy. We'll even review your policy to ensure you're getting every discount you qualify for.

Independent agents receive the rates for similar policies. Where you will find the difference is in the policy coverage and discounts being applied.

The team at Clayton Hanley is committed to finding every possible discount available and informing you of coverage that you might not know are available. We feel it is important to insure our customers like they are family, not simply find the lowest rate to gain your business.

Ask us! We love finding every last discount possible to save you money on your insurance.

Your college student might still be covered by your home insurance policy if they are living in on-campus housing and are listed as dependents on your policy. This generally extends personal property and liability coverage to them while they are away at school.  Coverage limits might be lower for belongings kept at a secondary location like a dorm

However, if they are living off-campus, you might need to get a separate renters insurance policy for them.

If they take their car to another state for college, they are typically still covered by your auto insurance policy. Most auto insurance policies offer nationwide coverage, which means the policy extends to all states.

If you have a child currently attending college or headed off to their first year in the fall, let us know and we'll go over how your policy applies and what additional coverage you should consider.

Telematics usually works by simply downloading a smartphone app. The app is capable of monitoring a variety of driving elements, which can include:

  • Distance and time of day driven
  • Location
  • Speed
  • Acceleration
  • Sudden stops
  • Phone Usage or Distracted Driving

Over time, you get a picture of your driving habits through the associated app that collects driving data for you. This allows you to work on areas for improvement, like staying under the speed limit or giving yourself more time to come to a stop to avoid the risk of hitting the car in front of you.
