## Answers to Questions We Hear Every Day

How do I change my insurance agent (but keep my policy)?

You can change your insurance agent without changing your insurance policy or carrier. You simply need to request a change of agent with your current insurance company. This can often be done with a phone call or by filling out a form provided by the insurer. It's a **straightforward process** and **does not affect your existing coverage terms or premiums**.

Clayton Hanley Insurance can make this super easy. We'll even review your policy to ensure **you're getting every discount you qualify for**.

Do insurance rates differ between insurance agents?

Independent agents receive the rates for similar policies. Where you will find the difference is in the policy **coverage** and **discounts** being applied.

The team at Clayton Hanley is **committed to finding every possible discount available** and informing you of coverage that you might not know are available. We feel it is important to **insure our customers like they are family** , not simply find the lowest rate to gain your business.

How do I add my teen to my auto insurance policy?

In Missouri, you should add your teenager to your auto insurance policy **as soon as they obtain their driver's license** (Some states may require you to add them to your policy when they obtain a learner’s permit). If they have a learner’s permit, it's a good idea to inform your insurance company, as some policies may already provide coverage for permitted drivers under the parent's insurance.

Be sure to [let us know](/contact) when your child starts learning to drive and we'll go over the insurance implications with you and let you know what you need to do and when.

How can I check to see if I'm getting all available discounts on my car/home insurance?

[Ask us](/quotes)! We love finding every last discount possible to **save you money on your insurance**.

Is my swimming pool covered by my home insurance policy?

An in-ground swimming pool is **usually** **covered** by home insurance, but it's typically under the "other structures" portion of your policy. This coverage can protect against damages from events like storms or vandalism. However, limits and exclusions apply, and you might need additional liability coverage for accidents related to the pool.

If you have an in-ground pool, are in the process of adding one, or considering purchasing a home with a pool,[let us know](/contact) and we can go over the impact it has on your premiums and additional insurance-related aspects to consider.

What natural disasters are covered by my home insurance policy?

A **typical** home insurance policy in Missouri usually covers damages from several natural disasters, including **windstorms** , **tornadoes** , **hail** , and **lightning**.

However, it's important to note that most standard policies **do not cover flooding or earthquakes**. These types of coverage usually require additional policies or endorsements.

If you're not sure what your policy covers, or what to add additional coverage, [let us know](/contact) and we'll provide recommendations and rates.

Is my college student covered by my insurance?

Your college student might still be covered by your home insurance policy if they are **living in on-campus housing** and are **listed as dependents on your policy**. This generally extends personal property and liability coverage to them while they are away at school. Coverage limits might be lower for belongings kept at a secondary location like a dorm

However, if they are **living off-campus** , you might need to get a **separate renters insurance policy** for them.

If they take their car to another state for college, they are typically still covered by your auto insurance policy. Most auto insurance policies offer nationwide coverage, which means the policy extends to all states.

If you have a child currently attending college or headed off to their first year in the fall, [let us know](/contact) and we'll go over how your policy applies and what additional coverage you should consider.

If I live in my RV, do I need home insurance or RV insurance?

If you live in your RV full-time, you'll need a specialized type of RV insurance often referred to as **full-time RV insurance**.

This coverage is more comprehensive than [standard RV insurance](/rv-insurance) because it acts similarly to a [homeowners insurance policy](/homeowner-insurance), providing coverage for liability, personal belongings, and living expenses in case of damage that makes the RV uninhabitable. It's not just a [standard auto policy](/auto-insurance) because it covers a broader range of risks associated with living in an RV permanently.

If you're headed out on a permanent road trip in your RV, or living the tiny-house lifestyle, Clayton Hanley can go over the various types of insurance you may want to consider and provide a quote from [our partner carriers](/insurance-companies).

Does my car insurance cover me driving a rental car on vacation?

Rentals are covered like it is your own car. Rental companies offer additional coverage, which would help pay for deductibles and downtime on the car in the event there is a claim. That portion would not be covered by your car insurance. Enjoy your trip!

What is a telematics or an insurance driving app?

Telematics usually works by simply downloading a smartphone app. The app is capable of monitoring a variety of driving elements, which can include:

- Distance and time of day driven
- Location
- Speed
- Acceleration
- Sudden stops
- Phone Usage or Distracted Driving

Over time, you get a picture of your driving habits through the associated app that collects driving data for you. This allows you to work on areas for improvement, like staying under the speed limit or giving yourself more time to come to a stop to avoid the risk of hitting the car in front of you.

I use my own car to deliver food. Does my personal car insurance cover me and my car?

**RideSharing Coverage** is for drivers who work for a hailing company such as Uber, Lyft or DoorDash, etc and drive their personal vehicles.

Ride Hailing company is also known as Transportation Network Corporation (TNC). RideSharing coverage can be added to your personal auto insurance policy.
